In another seismic break from the past, the Pixel 6 phones run in-house silicon. Specifically, at the heart of both the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro is Google's new Tensor SoC (system on chip). Designed by Google engineers, much as Apple does with its A series mobile chips, the Tensor is tailor-made for Android.

The Pixels offer the exact same field of view, which is fine, but I did find that the iPhone 13 Pro's superwide lens provides an even wider scene, something that will appeal to fans of wide-angle photography.

The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro with Google's in-house Tensor chip arrived at the company's October launch event, but how do they compare the Pixel 5? The Pixel 6 platform is a significant leap forward in terms of power, performance, features and design (here are all the differences between the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro), so getting a Pixel 5 or an even older Pixel now could certainly lead to instant buyer's remorse.

All of these tests show that the phones are able to produce pretty much identical images when using their main camera, with no difference in the level of visible detail or color balance. That's a relief if you're looking for great image quality overall but you're hoping to save some cash with the Pixel 6.

As spotted by 9to5Google, the update, which started heading to phones on Monday, includes camera quality improvements in undisclosed "certain" third-party apps while both devices will also see "performance optimizations for certain graphics-intensive apps and games." After installing the update, some Pixel 5 users on Twitter have reported seeing performance benchmarks in 3DMark improve by up to 50%.

Google's Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro wowed CNET's reviewers thanks to their attractive designs, clean Android 12 interface and solid overall performance. I even found the Pixel 6 Pro's camera to be a real rival to the iPhone 13 Pro when I put the two phones side by side, being able to take beautiful, well-exposed images in any conditions. It's why the Pixel 6 Pro earned a coveted CNET Editors' Choice award.

Google typically offers its latest Pixel for the same price that the previous Pixel cost. This time around the Pixel 6 starts at a more affordable $599. The Pixel Pro, on the other hand, has a base price of $899. That's a bit more expensive than its predecessor.

The Pixel 4A 5G also has 5G, but it doesn't have a higher refresh rate screen and it can't charge other accessories. It's also not water resistant, unlike the Pixel 5. It does, however, have a headphone jack similar to the Pixel 4A.

As Google's marquee handset, the Pixel 5 is the most premium and advanced of all phones. It features 5G connectivity, a 90Hz display and reverse wireless charging. Compared to its predecessor, it's $100 cheaper at launch and it makes big jumps in battery capacity and memory. In fact, preliminary battery tests on the Pixel 5 for continuous video playback on Airplane mode clocked in 21 hours -- twice as long as the Pixel 4's time the previous year. But it also replaced the Pixel 4's telephoto lens with an ultrawide camera, and it doesn't have Google's Soli motion sensing or facial recognition technology.

The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are the first Google phones not to come with chargers in their boxes. That said, both support 30 Watt USB-C fast wired charging. The Pixel 6 is the smaller of the two phones and it comes at a reasonable $599 -- a big cash saving over the Pixel 6 Pro's $899 asking price. But does that lower price mean you'll have to seriously compromise camera performance? Both phones have 50-megapixel main-camera sensors, backed up by 12-megapixel ultrawide lenses. The Pixel 6 Pro takes things further with the addition of a 48-megapixel telephoto zoom, which gives an impressive 4x zoom.

Not so with the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Minted in multiple splashy colors and apparently sporting glossy metal highlights, both handsets are clearly built to get noticed. That's a lot more visually exciting than the Pixel 5's two modest hues of "just black" and "sorta sage."

As for Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, there are similarities in many ways, but there are also a lot of differences. First of all, there's a $300 price difference between the base and pro models. For ponying up the extra cash, you get a slew of added features including a larger and higher-res screen, a bigger battery, support for both sub-6 and millimeter-wave 5G (the ultrafast but less reliable flavor of 5G) and the third rear camera, a telephoto lens with 4x optical zoom. As a reference point, that's higher than the iPhone 13's 3x optical zoom.

Even so, the Pixel 6 Pro's price just may be competitive enough to snatch premium phone market share away from Apple and Samsung. The Galaxy S21 ranges in price from $799 to $1,379. Similarly, the iPhone 13 costs anywhere from $799 to $1,099, depending on how you configure it.

One of the biggest improvements to the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are their imaging systems. Physically they're a lot bigger than the camera hardware you'll find on the Pixel 5. In fact these new cameras are so large they reside in a raised bar on the back side of each phone. They run the entire width of each handset too.

The result should be snazzed-up computing and video processing performance. Specifically, Google's design is built around an eight-core CPU with a 20-core Arm Mali-G78 MP20 GPU, and a Tensor Processing Unit machine learning engine. Also under the hood is an advanced image signal processor for photography, a Tensor security core, a "context hub" for ultra-low power capabilities, and 8MB system cache.

Starting off with this view overlooking Princes Street Gardens, both phones have captured a beautiful image with rich colors and masses of details thanks to that high-resolution sensor. There's basically no difference to tell between the shots -- they could easily have been taken with the same phone.

The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro were both unveiled this fall, and the Pro model has since made CNET's list of best smartphones for 2021. If you're considering a new Pixel phone, you may be wondering what's the difference between the latest models. (If you already have a Pixel 6, you should really change these default settings.) The pair come with a collection of welcome upgrades including Google's own Tensor chip, but there are a few differences between each Pixel 6 model and the Pixel 5 series.  

The Google Pixel 6 Pro's unique design, great software additions, superb camera quality and solid all-around performance have already earned the phone an excellent rating in our full review. But beyond the fact that the Pixel 6 lineup is made by Google, boasts top-of-the-line cameras and the best Android update policy around, what also makes it an interesting buy is what's found inside the device's revamped chassis. At the heart of the Pixel 6 series is that aforementioned Tensor system-on-a-chip. Tensor promises up to 48 hours of battery life, better "real-time language translations, highly accurate voice transcription and high-end camera features like the ability to unblur the face of a person in motion," according to a report from CNET. This marks the first time the company has built its phones without a Qualcomm chipset, endeavoring instead to build its own in-house. And because Google created Tensor, it's extending security and OS support to Pixel owners to five years.

All of Google's previous Pixel phones, including the Pixel 5, were deliberately designed not to distract from their screens. In the user's eye, the hardware was meant to drop away, serving as a mere vehicle for Google's Android software.

The 6 Pro can get pretty expensive, so you'll want to make sure you're getting the best Pixel 6 and 6 Pro deal that you possibly can. Overall, it's clear that the shared hardware of both phones means they're both able to take images of nearly identical quality. That could be an obvious conclusion, but it's often the case that manufacturers don't use quite as high-quality glass for the lens on cheaper models. Often they'll use less-advanced software, resulting in poorer performance, and therefore giving more reason to pay extra for the top model.

When the Pixel 5 debuted last October, it came with a $699 price tag. Now though, it'll set you back just $449. This steep price cut is no doubt due to all the advanced components the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro boast.

If, however, you're looking for a generally great camera for travel, and want to save some money, the Pixel 6 is a superb and affordable option to consider.

Google's latest Pixel phones, the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4A 5G follow last summer's launch of the Pixel 4A. The Pixel 5 is Google's main flagship phone and is the sequel to 2019's Pixel 4. The Pixel 4A 5G, meanwhile, serves as a bumped-up version of the Pixel 4A, which is part of Google's midrange line of phones. The Pixel 5 costs $699 (£599, AU$999) and the Pixel 4A 5G is $499 (£499, AU$799). Both phones are available for purchase now.

And they both perform well at night. This test shot is bright and pin-sharp, despite being handheld. I love all the light that's been captured in the clouds and the detail in the silky reflection on the water.

The big difference comes when you zoom in. The Pixel 6 doesn't have an optical zoom lens, but it does offer a 2x digital zoom. That zoom essentially just crops into the image, so it loses a lot of detail.

Amazon isn't directly discounting the phone, but instead bundling a free case with it. This bundle is only available on the 128GB Sorta Seafoam variant, though Amazon does sell other colors and storage capacities of the Pixel 6.

To find out if that zoom is the only difference between the two camera systems, I took both phones around Edinburgh to see what they can do.

If you don't want to worry about buying it through a carrier or having to deal with monthly bill credits, Best Buy is the place to go. Right now, when you buy and activate the phone on your plan you can save $50 on the purchase, dropping the price of the Pixel 6 down to just $550. If you are starting a new plan or adding a new line, Best Buy is slashing an extra $50 off the price, making it $500.

With the wide-angle lens, both phones take a dive in quality. The images are bright and there's almost no discernible shift in color from the main camera, but the details are mushier, almost as though it's not focused properly. 

So no matter where you are in the Pixel phone upgrade cycle, knowing how well the Pixel 6 devices stack up is an imperative. Here's how Google's uber handsets compare with last year's models.

The Google Pixel 6 Pro's unique design, great software additions, superb camera quality and solid all-around performance have already earned the phone an excellent rating in our full review. With performance that's every bit as good as its design, it's the best phone Google has ever made. The main camera is on par with the best iPhones. 5G

The Pixel 5 and 5A sit squarely in the midrange category, especially compared to the new Pixel 6 series. The Pixel 5 was Google's flagship phone last year, but its midrange position marked a departure from the pricey Pixel phones of years past. The Pixel 5 launched at $699 (£599, AU$999) and included 5G connectivity along with the fantastic cameras that have become the line's main selling point. But with that lowered asking price, Google chose to scale back on some features including the processor -- it went with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 765G.

When it comes to Pixel phones, there are a few different models available to purchase. Whether you're looking for the latest or a slightly older model, you should try to get it on sale. Google has a Pixel line as well as a lower-cost Pixel "A" line, which lacks some features you may find on the higher-end models. The current lineup of Google Pixel phones includes the Pixel 5A, Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.

But, since Google has put equal effort into the camera systems on both phones, it would only make sense from a photography perspective to spend extra if you want the telephoto zoom lens. Whether that's money worth spending is up to you. If you're really invested in your photos, I'd strongly consider saving up a bit more for the Pro: That 4x zoom can take stunning images with a field of view that opens up a wealth of compositions.

Back on the main camera, both phones have produced almost identical shots in this bright, vibrant scene. The skies have been kept completely under control and there's plenty of detail in the shadows on the boat on the right. There's almost no discernible difference in detail, contrast or white balance.

Both phones also feature a neat long-exposure mode, which I've been able to use here to capture car lights snaking their way through the dark city streets. It's impressive that the phones can keep everything else in sharp focus -- a handheld long exposure of several seconds on a regular camera would require a tripod.

Google introduces Pixel 6 and 6 Pro

And there's a reason for the extra bulk. The Pixel 6 camera platform is built around a massive main 50-megapixel sensor with a wide-angle lens. Both phones have 12-megapixel ultrawide lens and sensor combos, too. The Pixel 6 Pro, though, sets itself apart even further with an additional 48-megapixel telephoto camera.

Representing last year's ultimate Google-branded Android phone is the Pixel 5. It's powered by a respectably muscular Snapdragon 765G processor alongside a robust 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Google will also keep the device's software fresh until October 2023. Other welcome features include wireless and reverse wireless charging, plus IP68 water and dust protection. The Pixel 5 links to 5G cellular networks, too.
