My brother and I are close in age, so we share a love of video games — especially ones where we could tag team once one of us died or ran out of lives. Jack and Daxter, set in a fantastical world with fictional creatures and science-y magic, mimicked that relationship. The main character is largely in control and his weasel friend is the sidekick making wise cracks or subtly helpful commentary.

This variation on Sudoku logic puzzles adds a little mathematical spice. It groups collections of cells into "cages," each with a numeric total that its squares' values must add up to. The math, combinatorics and logic have kept me hooked for years. One of the strongest selling points is the dual number pads — one for your notes and one for your final answers. There's no pesky mode-switching like in virtually all other Sudoku-style games.

After a long, stressful day, there's nothing better than parking in front of a television and immersing myself in No Man's Sky. The object of the truly beautiful game is simply to explore a boundless universe. You can discover new planets that hold whimsical life and flora, adopt extraterrestrial animals, blast around in your spaceship, use hyperdrives to warp to faraway star systems, learn alien languages and so much more. The best part, though, is probably the fact that No Man's Sky doesn't really have a limit. The adventure's end escapes the player's sight because the game is so unthinkably vast. I'm honestly shocked every time I check out the map, seeing how little of the No Man's Sky universe I ventured into after hours upon hours of effort. The whole experience is relaxing and low-risk — finding easter eggs for the main storyline's mystery while hanging out with dinosaur-looking creatures, mining for cobalt in weird caves and walking around in baby pink fields of tall grass. If you love space, you'll fall in love with this game.

Frequently asked questions

"One of our principles says that you have to create a project that's bigger than any one person can do themselves," Demos said over a Zoom call. "And that invites people to participate in it, participation being a principle, and radical inclusivity. Everyone's building a platform, but not thinking about the community aspect of it."

Back in 2015, Daredevil was the start of an unprecedented and at the time pretty audacious experiment, ushering in a series of four interlinked Netflix shows starring Marvel heroes yet to appear in the MCU. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist (plus spinoff The Punisher) were gritty action dramas set in New York City's shadows, and Hawkeye is more like them than anything else in the whole MCU. There's even a long-take fight sequence that recalls the showpiece one-shot punch-ups in Daredevil (excuse me while I step out to watch those on YouTube).

While VR had a slow start, it's likely to pick up steam with so many invested in the metaverse. It's estimated that Meta's already sold around 10 million Quest 2 headsets, and browser, phone, PC and game console-enabled metaverse destinations are intended to catapult numbers much higher. Mass adoption of these platforms means tackling the same challenges that social media is still struggling to figure out, with the added dimension of a virtual space that could be far more impactful than any subtweet or comment.

Back again. In the first two episodes, Hawkeye is generally more lighthearted than the somber Netflix shows, which were absorbing but cumulatively became a bit of a drag. On paper, Hawkeye has a tortured-hero thing going on, but here's the thing about the whole Ronin business: It doesn't work. Clint's loss is supposed to have driven him to betray his morality as a vicious killer. Unfortunately, that isn't really what Endgame showed us. Thanks to Marvel's family-friendly tone and all the other massive amount of stuff that had to be fitted into the film, all we actually saw on screen was Clint getting a crap haircut and beating up some yakuza. Which is literally what a superhero usually does (dispatching gangsters, that is, although silly haircuts are also pretty common). OK, so he sliced people up with a sword, which is frowned upon in superhero circles, but we only know Clint was supposed to have crossed some moral line because he wouldn't shut up about it.

You'll get a 120-night trial, free shipping, free returns and a 10-year warranty policy, and your new bed will be conveniently delivered inside of a box. Once you unbox your mattress, remove the plastic wrap and unroll it, you'll notice an unpleasant off-gassing smell. It won't last long and it's not as bad as other mattresses I've tested, but you'll likely notice that the new-mattress odor I'm talking about will disappear in a day or so.

Kate is a rich kid with a chip on her shoulder, much to the exasperation of her mom, played warmly by Vera Farmiga (last seen in Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark). Kate's also a talented martial artist and archer, not to mention a Hawkeye super-fan. The best thing about the show is the classic buddy pairing between the enthusiastic youngster and moody mentor, with Steinfeld and Renner sparking off each other to amusing effect.

Marvel's latest Disney Plus series is a fun, free-wheeling action show energized by scene-stealing Hailee Steinfeld, who joins grouchy archer Jeremy Renner for some good, honest comfort viewing. Its snackable action makes it the opposite of Disney's other big holiday release, the super-long Beatles documentary Get Back.

Schofield told me the game's witches speak to a larger theme of discrimination and acceptance. The witchcraft in Wylde Flowers is based more in fantasy than paganism, according to Schofield, but is nevertheless integral to the game's story. The juxtaposition of Fairhaven's concern over potential ne'er-do-wells in an otherwise progressive and accepting environment, could open conversation about what discrimination looks like.

I've been playing the Classic Words app five to 10 times a day, every single day for years. It's basically Scrabble before the Scrabble app got ruined by its Candy Crush-like makeover. I play Classic Words when I'm eating, waiting, falling asleep and facing insomnia. It's always there for me. I play it in single-player mode against the computer, which is great because it's essentially always my turn. The game works especially well against insomnia because I am so determined to win that my brain has no space left for my worries. I only win about a third of the time, but I do play at the highest level and the computer constantly uses words I've never heard of. I am not deterred.

I love a good pillow-top mattress, so it was no surprise that the first thing I spotted upon seeing the inflated Brooklyn Bedding Signature mattress was its plush, airy topper. I think it adds an extra component of softness and comfort that you can't always get from foam. It also makes it look a bit luxurious, even though it's a pretty standard hybrid mattress without any special bells and whistles.

Standing in a bare virtual room created in AltspaceVR, along with two other actors and with Jeff Wirth, director of the interactive acting-focused Interactive PlayLab and my VR coach, I found something far more uplifting. We stood close to each other, paying attention to when our avatar eyes drifted, an automatic move created by Microsoft's virtual worlds app to simulate eye contact without eye tracking. We learned to move our heads to trigger this eye movement and more intentionally create a sense of presence. Wirth also reminded me that, as I spoke, my hands stayed too still. Moving my hands more, and animating, made my avatar more expressive. I had to learn to perform, in a sense, to better express myself as a human.

"Nothing bad will happen to you in Wylde Flowers," Schofield said. "I think letting people explore games on their own terms and [in] a way that makes them feel safe and cozy is a really powerful way for games to be entertainment, but also healing mechanisms for people in times like this."

But don't worry about that this holiday season. Just stuff yourself full of turkey and some warmed-up Hawkeye.

Hawkeye himself, meanwhile, is drawn back into the violent underworld searching for the suit he wore while temporarily rebranding as violent vigilante Ronin during the Blip (the years when Thanos wiped out half of the galaxy's population, including Hawkeye's wife and kids). The New York setting flits from high-society murder mystery to street-level punch-up in a way that will strongly remind fans of a previous attempt to bring the MCU to the small screen: Daredevil.

Underneath that light, pillowy topper is soft foam that molds to my curves, but doesn't make me feel like I'm sinking into it. The coils in the bottom layer help give the mattress a springiness, while the foam in the top layers is quick to bounce back to normal. The cover also gives it a premium aesthetic, making it look almost as good as it feels.

Overall, Hawkeye isn't a tortured antihero searching for redemption, he's still just affable Jeremy Renner trundling around looking grumpy. And the show mostly knows this, sticking him into action scenes that are more playful than perilous. Episode 2 in particular has both Clint and Kate engaged in mock combat that's fun to watch rather than hazardous to their health, a jaunty twist on the gritty action-scene-every-episode formula.

Edge support

Many VR participants, including Wirth and BRCvr's Demos and Jacobson, don't necessarily see bubbles as the real long-term answer. Despite providing protection, they also restrict intimacy.

I'm a word person, which is why I like Wordle, Spelling Bee and crossword puzzles. But it's for that very reason I added this free pattern-matching game to my daily morning routine. I'm not a visual thinker (I sometimes even print things out!), but I want to exercise the part of my brain that allows me to master each day's Set in just a minute or two.

"We built incredible characters that represent real people [that] you can see yourself in," Schofield told me over video chat. The developers explored deeper questions and motivations for each character, which resulted in 19 hours of voiceover dialogue in the game. There are so many conversational branches that players might not unlock them all in a single play through the entire game.

It's been more than a decade since it came out, but I can still hear soft winds flowing through the sea of trees in the dense Falkreath Hold region and the distant roars of dragons flying through the sky. There's a constant sense of adventure and a feeling of hope when exploring Skyrim, and all set against a lush and moving ambient score. There's a certain comfort in familiarity, and that's what Skyrim always excels at offering me. If I want to vibe with a game's setting and explore, then Skyrim will never be a bad choice.

When the chaos of everyday life beats you down and you're in recovery mode, I find it comforting to go through the motions of extremely difficult video games that require mastery. First impressions

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature bed is a solid hybrid mattress that manages to provide both support and pressure-relieving comfort. The softer the mattress profile you go with, the more you'll descend into the comfort layers. It's not in a sinking memory foam way, but more of a pressure-relieving and gentle hugging fashion. On the firm option, however, you'll be sitting more on top of the bed rather than into it. Either way, it's an incredibly pleasant and responsive feel that I think most people will enjoy because it's so neutral and accommodating.

Knowing what the norms of behavior are for most virtual worlds is hard, because the rules of engagement are often looser. Wander into a random space in VRChat, or meander through the virtual world app Rec Room, and you'll see what I mean. Usually, avatars are half-engaged, at best. Tapping into existing communities, and codes of behavior, is a huge help. As the metaverse remains half-defined, strong existing communities are probably the best way to start.

Demos sees community standards, built through the community itself, as the way forward. "We can't just have everyone with a personal bubble, right? The solution is conflict resolution, working with the public, and having everyone feel like they're part of the whole. The problem isn't in the metaverse. The problem is systemic."

More affecting is Clint's sense of loss for Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, lost fighting Thanos in Endgame. This summer's Black Widow movie served as a belated moment in the spotlight for Scarlett Johansson, and it also adds a layer to Renner's relatively uncomplicated character. Which ties into Black Widow's post-credits scene, suggesting the series will bring together two scene-stealing new recruits as Steinfeld and Black Widow's breakout Florence Pugh are set to face off.

One of the largest metaverse gatherings I've seen in the past two years was a virtual version of the Burning Man festival, also held in AltSpaceVR. BRCvr, an event and organization that synthesized Burning Man's principles virtually, was turned into a stand-in for the closed physical event during the pandemic in 2020, and continued in 2021. Athena Demos and Doug Jacobson, who led the creation of Burning Man in VR, said they learned a lot about the keys to a successful virtual community. One of those is having established principles to build on. Burning Man's own tenets were used to help remind creators and attendees of what behavior in that space should feel like.

These brief moments of connection give me hope for the future of the metaverse, a layer of virtual worlds that the largest tech companies are betting is where we'll hang out, spend money and live our digital lives. The metaverse promises to be a social playground, a series of magical doorways to meet people and make friends. And yet, in these new destinations, metaverse apps can end up delivering alienation as well as community. It's often unclear which you'll get at any time. Despite all my hours in VR, my comfort with these experiences ebb and flow.

Shah and Fitzgerald said that the rules of engagement are being figured out, and as Shah pointed out, the real-time, in-person nature of most VR and metaverse meetings is a lot different from the asynchronous, broadcast nature of most social media now. Social VR is almost always a live experience with appointment-based connections. Getting those moments synced with the rest of our internet lives remains awkward. I find it best when I'm connecting with just a few people I already know, just like any Zoom or phone call, and keeping the rest of the noise out.

This year's Burning Man will take place in person in Black Rock, Arizona, while the virtual Burning Man may happen later in the fall, as a sort of place to relive the experience again. But Demos and Jacobson are working on ways to bridge the metaverse and reality together, via portals where avatars can look out on Burning Man, and those at Burning Man can look back in. And the year after, they intend to blend the worlds further.

Kitchen and Household

Companies like Meta, which are aiming for millions of people to both play and work in the metaverse, are going to need those boundaries clearly defined. Meta's vice president of metaverse, Vishal Shah, told me the process is a work in progress: "It was important for us to make [personal boundaries] a default, because it helps set norms."

Wylde Flowers requires communication with the townspeople to progress in the game – whether that means selling your crops, getting advice on the best fishing spots or continuing your magic training after sunset. Each interaction can improve your relationship with the other characters and shed light on their hopes, dreams, losses and origins.

Shortly after Tara arrives in Fairhaven, she discovers that she's a witch. Her grandmother is part of a secret coven that meets in the woods. In addition to her farming duties and social life, Tara must also hone her magical abilities, brew potions and master flying on her broomstick.

In addition to including a narrative structure, Wylde Flowers shines with the inclusion of a diverse, complex and interesting population. After just a few interactions between Tara and members of Fairhaven's bustling population, I could see the thought and care that had gone into building the game.

"Anywhere that technology is used, women are using technology, and therefore women should be part of the process of developing it," Schofield said. "You really need those voices, especially those that represent the end user. Whoever you're trying to target needs to be a voice in the product that you're creating, and it's dangerous to build without that."

Comfortable neutral and responsive feel

These nostalgic mystery adventure PC games do more than just help you learn new skills and practical knowledge; the settings are all so cozy. Want to be transported to a castle in Ireland in the fall, a mansion in rainy New Orleans or a chalet in the Canadian Rockies, buried deep in the winter snows? Settle in with a cup of tea, a blanket and a Nancy Drew game to learn something new — like Braille, Morse Code, the Chinese zodiac, Mayan glyphs, nautical flags or binary code — while cracking the case and bringing villains to justice.

Firmness

Meta's approach has moved to trying to reinforce community behavior through employees acting as guides in these open areas instead of just using signs, but it also means leaning on a lot of trust that participants will behave.

Demos, Jacobson and Wirth are aiming for a similar goal: getting more empathy between people, bringing down barriers and establishing trust. That's not easy, especially in a world full of trolling and harassment. But the path forward, through small communities, makes me feel optimistic. At times, it made me feel welcomed.

If we're ever going to form a deeper society that lives between worlds, in virtual spaces as well as physical ones, we'll need better control of these tools, and understand the norms of these virtual spaces. That's likely to happen as more companies like Apple and Google enter the metaverse, but it remains a major question as the metaverse starts to take hold: Are these virtual spaces, often with cartoon avatars, an extension of real society, or are they their own unique spaces?

And in those VR worlds on the virtual playa, which mirrored the structures and sculptures at the physical Burning Man, Demos wanted to make visitors feel like participants, not observers.

Shah said personal contacts with existing relationships find the boundaries off-putting, which is why Meta created a new, smaller boundary with friends. "You're going to start seeing more from us in those kinds of ways," Shah said, saying Meta is exploring ways to create more nuanced audio that filters unwanted strangers, or audio bubbles that protect from random encounters. "Maybe the rules around a public space, like the Plaza, are different than private instances, or invite-only type spaces, where the intent on why you went there is different."

In this Brooklyn Bedding Signature mattress review, I reveal what I did and didn't like about it, as well as my thoughts on its different features like firmness, feel and price -- just about everything you'd want to know about a bed.

This is where existing platforms are going to need to act fast to keep bad behavior in check, and prevent random trolling and harassment, especially in public zones where proper moderation or community support may not exist. Microsoft's AltSpace VR closed many of its public spaces earlier this year, and instituted personal privacy bubbles for avatars, mirroring what Meta also added to Horizon Worlds.

Burning Man's VR festivals had community-volunteer rangers who helped moderate events, and greeters who helped people find their way. Demos and Jacobson said that responsibility has to come from the organizers of an event, not necessarily the platform itself, just like creating any other real-life event at a venue. "It's helpful in the early days to have an existing community, because that existing community will have a huge motivation to get through whatever the technological layers they need to get through to get to the hangout zone," Jacobson said.

I spend a lot of time hanging out in Greek villas and Monte Carlo penthouses. I also expend an excessive amount of mental energy thinking about the decor that should fill these spaces. Would a simple, woven ottoman look gauche against those marble floors? What sort of luxe side table would best complement the wall's gold inlay? I blame this annoying quality on Design Home, a mobile game for iOS and Android that tasks you with designing rooms in much the same way you'd decorate a house built in the Sims. Even if the metaverse suggests a massively social multiverse, it's also hopefully going to be a place with smaller, more personal interactions. If that's the case, then great: I need more connection that matters. Maybe it's as simple as making sure metaverse meetings have a purpose in the first place, and making sure everyone knows what that purpose is. The less open-world and free-form, and the more contained and purposeful, the happier I am. Virtual improv classes and connections with friends are great. It's the rest of the massively social metaverse I'm not so sure about.

Because that's what you do when you have the attention span of a squirrel and all that's left are daily challenges and a few perennially gnarly puzzles in each. But they also mesh well: The first two combine color matching and strategy, the third combine color- and pattern-matching with strategy and the last is a complex game where you have to get a light beam from A to B using lenses and mirrors. I also love QB, Projekt and Shadowmatic, but they sadly have no new challenges. I still keep them on my phone, though, just in case an update magically appears. They're all pretty and easy enough for when I need a short distraction or something to begin the process of shutting down my brain for the night.

Philosopher David Chalmers, in his recent book Reality+, sees agreement on the realism of the space as of the challenges in virtual societies: Game worlds or play spaces have one set of rules, but "once one sees virtual worlds as genuine realities, however, then the ethics of virtual worlds becomes in principle as serious as ethics in general."

This series transcends all of that for me, tying together an endless parade of seemingly disconnected games through shared themes, memorable characters and unforgettable music. Final Fantasy can be a game about medieval warriors battling an ancient evil. It can also be a game about four teenagers who play cellphone games and love camping going on a road trip together.

"It means that every time you stop by and have a chat with somebody, they've got a little bit of something to tell you," Schofield said. "They all have really deep story arcs that you get to know as your relationship forms with them."

Combined with little snippets of silliness like the comical villains the Tracksuit Mafia and a musical about Steve Rogers and the Avengers (which gets plenty of screen time in episode 1), Hawkeye makes a fun festive treat. Comparisons with Daredevil and its ilk are a reminder that for many fans there were just too many of those shows, giving them the dubious distinction of making the MCU feel inessential. With a whopping 14 further Marvel series confirmed for Disney Plus, it feels like fans could be overwhelmed again.

There are a ton of coils in the Brooklyn Bedding Signature mattress, and because of that, it helps keep the edges of the mattress sturdy and supportive. It's not hard to get out of bed, nor should you get the feeling like you're going to fall off the edge if you're settled all the way to the left or right side.

"In those public spaces, regardless of what the norms are in more of the private or smaller community groups, everyone is part of enforcing that if they've been there before," Meaghan Fitzgerald, Meta's product marketing director for Horizon Worlds, said in an interview. "What I think makes this scalable is that there is an understanding that is shared among people who are the denizens of this space, and they are part of educating others."

Because the Brooklyn Bedding Signature mattress gives customers options, I think all sleeping positions from side, back, or stomach all the way to combo can find a mattress that suits their preferences.

Brooklyn Bedding is a powerhouse in the online mattress industry because it offers several quality mattresses at very fair, affordable prices. The secret to the sauce is that Brooklyn Bedding owns its own manufacturing plants and makes its own beds, allowing the brand to cut costs by removing the middleman from the picture.

This might sound like an odd choice: A twitch shooter set in the battle royale genre as something to relax you? I've put hundreds of hours into this game along with some of my closest friends. At this point we know the characters, weapons and maps like the back of our hands. This familiarity and our low-stakes approach to winning means the game is more of a chatroom for us to hang out in while mildly engaging our brains and hands. Apex is also a live service game with new daily challenges and rewards to unlock, which means it's always available and offering something for us.

I grew up with James Bond Goldeneye on N64, but something about the graphics, the controller, and battle games, is endlessly satisfying. This is the first and only Bond game that wasn't based on a film, so the storyline is mediocre, but just enough to keep you engaged.

Nothing to complain about here. It's really good at absorbing motion, even though there are coils in the bottom layer. With the pillow top combined with several slabs of foam, it does a good job at stopping motion in its tracks. If you sleep with a partner and want a hybrid bed, I think this would be a nice option.

I take some faith in the future thanks to some VR acting classes. My conclusion: The more connected we can be without the strange mediation of text or emoji, the better. In some ways, like a phone call, VR interactions can feel more real than social media feeds  – as long as everyone's on the same page trusting each other. That's easier said than done in a universe where trust in people seems more frayed than ever.

Wirth sees most online conflict stemming from states of disconnect, like flame wars decades ago, or even the imperfect stand-in for emotions that emoji serve now. It's no accident that Big Tech has left figuring out human interaction in the metaverse for last, because it's the hardest part to solve.

I have a long history with the Dishonored game series. Before my husband and I even started dating, we'd hang out and take turns playing the game (no co-op feature, alas). We challenged each other on missions — who could be stealthier, who could line up the most creative kill shot and so on. The game casts you as Corvo Attano, a Royal Protector wrongly accused of assassinating Empress Jessamine Kaldwin. After teaming up with a resistance group and gaining magical powers, Corvo embarks on a quest to avenge the fallen empress and restore her daughter, Emily Kaldwin, to the throne.

The Forza Horizon series takes racing away from regular, gray tangles of asphalt and throws it into stunning, sprawling open worlds. And while the frantic nature of motor racing is very much still a part of the game, much of my enjoyment comes from simply driving around and sightseeing on my own time, at my own pace. The actual races are great fun when I want that kind of thing, but I've sunk hour upon happy hour behind the wheel of a McLaren or a Bugatti — or some souped-up off-roader — just casually exploring every inch of the gigantic maps on offer.

As we're entering our third year of a global pandemic, games both old and new remain an important way to stay in touch with friends, unwind and have a good time. Here's a list of some of CNET's favorite comfort games.

When the world feels like it's moving way too fast, I sit down and play a game of Tetris. The game is so absorbing (and addicting) that I can forget about the world outside for a while. It's an old video game, debuting way back in 1984, with a very simple premise. Why has Tetris stuck around so long? "We have an inherent desire to create order out of chaos," says Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov. "Tetris satisfies that desire on a very basic level."

One of my favorite parts is the 1-inch quilted top that makes it feel more plush and light.

When I think of a comfort game, I want an experience that allows me to tune out and just let myself soak up the details and vibe of a compelling setting. No other game does that more than The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Trial, warranty, shipping

I can relate to this. I feel it all the time. And it feels like the start of how to build communities in virtual worlds.

Final Fantasy VII

A beautiful open world with no restrictions on how and when you can explore it makes for a great gaming experience, and Breath of the Wild's world is breathtaking to behold. Maybe it's the cell-shaded art style, the gentle soundtrack or the skittish critters you'll accidentally disturb on your travels, but its overall vibe is the gaming equivalent of sinking into a warm bath. I often describe it as "happy Skyrim" and it's a game I enjoy replaying again and again.

Where do I buy a Brooklyn Bedding mattress?

Even before the pandemic, comfort games like Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley and the Sims series have held a special place in the hearts of players. If you're in the market for a cozy game, I recommend Wylde Flowers, a new farm life simulator available exclusively on Apple Arcade.

The first two episodes of Hawkeye stream on Disney Plus on Nov. 24. The remainder of the six-episode series then arrive each Wednesday until Christmas, which means you could save them up for a festive binge. On the cozy side, Renner returns as archery-themed Avenger Clint Barton (aka Hawkeye) just trying to get back to his loving family in time for Christmas. And if you're sick of your family's nonsense, maybe you'll vibe with the complicated familial dynamics encountered by his new sidekick Kate Bishop, whose fairytale life comes complete with a wicked stepfather.

The cover is quilted into the mattress, and while it's super-soft and comfy, it's not machine washable. So, if you ever spill on the cover or drool a little more than usual, you'll have to spot clean it with warm water and a gentle detergent.

Not all beds are made to be one-size-fits-all, but Brooklyn Bedding manages to come pretty close.

I still remember the exact paths to find hidden dungeons and lost weapons to outfit my character, and which characters I would choose to side with over others. It's a game that feels nostalgic, but it has a way of surprising me every time with new secrets I haven't yet uncovered.

If you're a combination sleeper, I recommend you cater to your most dominant side, or go for the medium-firm model. It still offers some pressure relief when you're on your side, and most beds will soften up over time.

This is a mobile game where you essentially have to connect colored dots in straight lines or squares. You get a limited amount of moves to beat each level and you need to concentrate and look for patterns, but it's not difficult mentally, so I almost go into a meditative state when I play it. The best part of this game? The music. The music is awesome. There's even a Spotify playlist of the Two Dots music that I sometimes fall asleep to. The game is free and there are no ads and the UI is beautiful. There are also minigames within the game where you search for hidden objects in an imaginary land filled with people, animals and objects. The illustrations are amazing!

"The most difficult things to do, programmatically, are the things that make us most human," Wirth said, feeling that we don't have a well-developed body language for VR yet. Wirth thinks that will come, with practice and conscious work. It's all still weird prosthetics now, game controllers in my hands and a big headset on my face. Eye tracking and hand tracking suggest more natural, subtle body language to come, but will people feel comfortable trusting headsets to track us with so many cameras and sensors?

I'm currently playing Brilliant Diamond for the Nintendo Switch, but this can apply to any game in the main series. I love turn-based battle games, and Pokemon is an easy, casual game that I can play in bed as I'm drifting off to sleep. It's challenging enough to keep my attention, but not so much that I can't play it when I'm too tired to concentrate. I'm in the bad habit of having to look at some type of screen before bed, and playing Pokemon is way more relaxing than doomscrolling on my phone.

Answering that question, and figuring out how we should be behaving in these virtual worlds, is critical. Harassment and toxic behavior in VR is already a real problem, as well as a lack of proper safety settings to keep kids from mixing with random adults in virtual world apps.

I never expected a survival horror game about a contagious virus to become a comfort game for me, and certainly not in the middle of a global pandemic. But I found myself excited to roam around the police station and underground, being chased by zombies and even deadlier monsters. The more stressful my day, the more eager I was to go back to Raccoon City. Maybe it's the way RE2's immersive atmosphere makes me forget about the outside world. Maybe it's the crisp, exciting gameplay that offers a sense of control that's been severely lacking for the past couple of years. Or maybe it's just the thought that, if Leon and Claire can survive Raccoon City, I can make it through my real-world struggles.

The developers truly showcase the beauty of diversity with Fairhaven's residents, but the idyllic island isn't without its flaws. Shortly after Tara discovers her supernatural heritage, it becomes clear that not all of Fairhaven is as open-minded as her grandmother. Residents are curious, yet wary of what strange things might be happening in the woods at night. The witches wear ornate robes and masks to conceal their true identities, but Tara's grandmother thinks it's time for the coven to be able to live in the open and be authentically themselves.

VR can already be a strange place, but in open social platforms, it also means understanding whether you're all agreeing to the same behavior norms for that shared experience. It again reminds me of improv: Without agreeing to what gets created between performers, and respecting the rules that exist in a game or a space, you can create a state of denial. It can get chaotic fast. Trolling in games is also the result of this lack of respect.

You dislike the feel of memory foam

I found myself learning to trust, and listen, and be aware of my own movements. Much like trust games in improv, which involve a lot of listening and group focus, the trust in connecting with others can follow too. In one exercise, I learn to virtually walk at my own normal walking speed, small movements of the controller. The exercise is experimental, but it reminds me to be more aware I'm actually in a virtual world. I'm always tempted to hop away and treat it like a video game. But the more I learn to really feel like I'm there, the more I treat it with respect.

"When we feel more connected, we treat each other better," Wirth said.

Even before the pandemic, video games have provided vast, open-world RPGs, intricate puzzles, immersive storytelling and more. But some games call you back for another play time and time again, and will forever hold a special place in your heart — your comfort game. Your definition of comfort might be drastically different from someone else's, and that's what makes it interesting.

My wife and I call Red Dead Redemption 2 "Sad Cowboys." The story is tense, gut-wrenching, introspective and about sacrifice. I'm not ashamed to say that I've teared up a time or two while playing. But the open-world aspect of the game lets you eschew that and pull a Henry David Thoreau. You can head out into the pristine wilderness with your trusty steed and explore forests, mountains and deserts teeming with wildlife. Hunt, fish and start a campfire to cook whatever food you've caught. Pitch a tent under the star-speckled sky for the night. If you go into Saint Denis, the game's major city, you can sit in a park and people-watch, walk around the city and eavesdrop on NPCs or go to a bar and have a drink. The game can be as relaxing, or as intense, as you want it to be.

CNET Cheapskate

For a mattress as well-constructed as Brooklyn Bedding Signature, I'd assume it would be more expensive than beds like the all-foam Casper mattress. To my surprise, it's around the same price at retail. When you apply discounts, which Brooklyn Bedding is pretty generous with, it's even cheaper -- my mind was fairly blown. If you want a quality hybrid mattress for the same price of a basic foam bed, Brooklyn Bedding Signature is hard to beat.

Since there are three firmness levels, all sleeping types can find a match that fits them. Side sleepers should opt for the soft or medium model depending on how soft you want your bed to be, while back and stomach sleepers will get more back support from the firm model.

Anyone who has played the Sims a lot knows that interest in the game comes in cycles. For a month, all I'll want to do is cozy up and play… until one day I just can't be bothered. Is it over? Never! In another month or two I'll wake up one day and all I'll be able to think is, "I really have the urge to hide a Sim in a basement, make them paint all day everyday and use the profits of these paintings to fund a multi-generational dynasty." Or maybe that's just me.

I tend to know the rules of any virtual connection with friends and colleagues that I throw together, because we're there for a particular purpose, and we know the social codes. I've been playing VR mini-golf and a role-playing game called Demeo with old college friends for the past few months, and it's been a lot of fun. But to me, even if these are angular polygon avatars, I see them as my friends. And these games have their own rules. The acting class I popped into had its own structure.

So I loved Animal Crossing New Horizons, but I didn't enjoy being browbeaten for having a life outside of the game. And that led me to Spry Fox's Cozy Grove — which I rewarded myself with for scoring a job at CNET! This game doesn't passive aggressively chastise me for having a real life alongside my virtual one. I've been playing The Sims since it first came out 22 years ago and I was a baby of 7 years old. It got me into gaming and fostered my love of architecture. (Fun fact, I wanted to be an architect for the longest time growing up! Until I realized I needed math.)

On the scale of imagination from earthbound punch-ups to cosmic flights of fancy, WandaVision and Loki were dementedly ingenious trips to the more surreal reaches of Marvel lore, while The Falcon and The Winter Soldier was a much more meat-and-potatoes action story. Inspired by writer Matt Fraction and artist David Aja's entertainingly grounded 2012 comic, the Hawkeye series is way down at the earthier end of the Marvel weirdness spectrum, dealing with all-too-human heroes, family politics and grubby street crime. The enjoyment comes not from brain-battering cleverness but from the show's energy: The fight scenes fizz with kinetic energy, and the whole thing is carried by lead actors sparking off each other.

Schofield was inspired by the world's reception of Animal Crossing: New Horizons in 2020. The game provided a sense of connection to a world of people who were alone at home and missing their loved ones, Schofield said. The team went on to lean into what Schofield calls the "cozy game genre" to give players a safe space to escape and tend a farm – or examine important issues.

My Slumber Yard

The gaming industry experienced a boom in 2020 due to the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, quarantines and business closures. Games such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Among Us skyrocketed in popularity at the onset of the pandemic as they offered connection, distraction and ultimately comfort in an unprecedented time.
